The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) initiative of Union Ministry of Jal Shakti is organizing Ganga Utsav-The River Festival 2022 on Friday to celebrate rivers and spread awareness on the importance of river rejuvenation in basins in India.
“NMCG will take Ganga Utsav-The River Festival 2022 to new heights through active and inspiring participation of multiple stakeholders. One of the main objectives of Ganga Utsav 2022 is to celebrate our rivers and spread awareness on the importance of river rejuvenation in river basins in India. Dedicating the grand event of 75 years of Indian Independence (Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav), the ministry aims to organize similar events at over 75 locations across states to celebrate the rivers of India, the ministry said in a statement.
The main event is being organized at Major Dhyanchand Stadium in New Delhi with dance and music performances by several eminent personalities. Activities like puppet shows, film screenings, painting, pottery and nest making workshops are also being organized. The ministry will also felicitate major contributors to the Clean Ganga Fund.
The Ministry has also organized District Ganga Committees to ensure active participation at lower levels. "There will be several awareness activities in the districts to establish rapport with the local people and to promote Namami Gange as a mass movement," the ministry said.
Ganga Utsav was first organized in 2017 under a different name – Ek Sham Ganga Ke Naam. After this its name was changed to Bal Ganga Mela in 2018. The third edition was a three-day virtual event due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and returned to a physical event in 2021.
