Odisha Weather Alert: Deep Depression Nears Coast, Heavy Rain Warning
A developing weather system over the Bay of Bengal has put Odisha on alert as it moves towards the South Odisha-North Andhra Pradesh coast. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system is expected to intensify into a deep depression and approach the coast around September 23.
The latest weather warnings indicate that several parts of Odisha may experience heavy to extremely heavy rainfall during the next few days. The situation is being closely monitored as the system moves west-northwestwards over the Bay of Bengal.
Deep Depression Moving Towards Odisha Coast
The weather system developed from a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal after forming near the Andaman Sea region. It has been strengthening while moving towards the western part of the Bay of Bengal.
The IMD has indicated that the system is likely to reach the vicinity of the North Andhra Pradesh-South Odisha coast around the morning of September 23. Weather conditions over the coast and adjoining districts are therefore expected to deteriorate during this period.
Extremely Heavy Rainfall Warning
The immediate concern for Odisha is heavy rainfall rather than the name or final intensity of the system. The IMD's September 21 warning indicates extremely heavy rainfall over parts of Odisha on September 23 and September 24.
The weather system may produce intense rainfall over short periods, which can lead to waterlogging, flooding of low-lying areas, disruption of road movement and localised problems in areas receiving very heavy rain.
Six Districts Under Red Alert
According to the latest reports citing the IMD, red-level warnings for extremely heavy rainfall have been issued for Kandhamal, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Kalahandi and Rayagada for September 23 and 24.
Other districts are also expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall under the influence of the system. Residents should follow district-level advisories because rainfall intensity can vary considerably from one location to another.
Will It Become a Cyclone?
At present, the system should not automatically be described as a confirmed cyclone. The IMD has forecast intensification into a deep depression, while some weather models have indicated the possibility of further strengthening.
The final intensity, movement and impact will depend on how the system develops over the Bay of Bengal. Residents should rely on official IMD bulletins rather than unverified cyclone tracking messages circulating on social media.
Strong Winds Along the Coast
Strong and squally winds are also expected along and off parts of the South Odisha and North Andhra Pradesh coasts during the period of closest approach.
Coastal residents, fishermen and people involved in marine activities should closely follow official warnings issued by the IMD and local authorities.
Fishermen Advised to Remain Cautious
With deteriorating sea conditions expected near the affected coastal areas, fishermen are advised to follow the latest marine weather warnings and avoid venturing into the sea when official restrictions are in force.
Families of fishermen and coastal communities should remain alert to official announcements from local administration and disaster-management authorities.
What Odisha Residents Should Do
People living in vulnerable and low-lying areas should monitor weather updates and keep essential items ready in case local authorities issue evacuation or movement advisories.
During intense rainfall, residents should avoid unnecessary travel through flooded roads, overflowing drains and waterlogged areas. People should also stay away from fallen electric wires, damaged structures and fast-moving floodwater.
Bhubaneswar and Coastal Odisha
Bhubaneswar and other coastal and adjoining districts may also experience periods of heavy rainfall as the system approaches the Odisha coast.
The exact rainfall intensity at individual locations can change with the movement of the system. Residents should therefore check the latest district-specific warning before making travel or outdoor plans.
Government Agencies on Alert
Weather-related preparations are being monitored as the system approaches the coast. District administrations and disaster management authorities may issue additional instructions based on subsequent IMD forecasts.
Residents should follow instructions issued by the Odisha government, district administration, police, fire services and other emergency agencies during periods of severe weather.
