Congress criticize Supreme Court on release of Rajiv Gandhi's killers

Supreme Court

The Congress on Friday termed the Supreme Court's decision to release the killers of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi as "completely unacceptable" and "completely wrong".

“The Supreme Court's decision to free the remaining killers of former PM Rajiv Gandhi is unacceptable and completely wrong. The Congress party categorically criticizes it and considers it completely unforgivable. It is most unfortunate that the Supreme Court has not acted in the spirit of India on this issue,” Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said in a statement.

Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court directed the premature release of six convicts, including Nalini Sriharan and RP Ravichandran, who are serving life sentences in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

A bench of Justices BR Gavai and BV Nagarathna observed that the court's decision in the case of AG Perarivalan, one of the convicts in the case, is equally applicable in their case.

"As far as the applicants before us are concerned, due to delay their death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment... We direct that all the appellants have been served their sentence... unless necessary in any other case,” the bench said.

Nalini and Ravichandran had moved the apex court for their premature release.
